Well hello there! For those of you who don’t know, I’m Jenelle, 22 year old Graphic Designer from small town Caledonia, Ontario, and this is my very first blog post! One of the things on my list of “to-do’s” for 2015 was to start a blog to go along with my website to share my design experiences, and tips and tricks that may help fellow designers.
Ever since I was in elementary school, I knew that I wanted to be in the Graphic Design industry. I was always that girl putting way too much effort into school art projects. I guess you could say I get my perfectionism from my Dad. In grade 9, not too many people ever know what they want to do by the end of their four years of High School. As for me, I knew Graphic Design was where I wanted to be well before the first day of grade 9. Through High School I took many art courses and even received awards for Media Arts, Visual Arts and Communications. These awards verified for me, that I was indeed on the right track.
After High School I moved on to Mohawk College’s Graphic Design Production – Digital Media Course. I can easily say that the program provided me with the best three years of my life. I loved every second of it and met some pretty amazing and inspiring people that I am still in contact with today. During the course I completed a 1 year co-op placement at the University of Waterloo as a Digital Media Assistant. This placement gave me a good idea of what the work world was really like – working with real clients with real deadlines. Following this co-op position I was granted a summer position with the University after my final semester of school, and continued to gain experience in the field.
The entire summer I knew there was something else that I wanted to do with my life and career but just couldn’t put a finger on it. Finally, it hit me! I wanted to one day be able to start my own Graphic Design business and get into Entrepreneurship. From there I went back to Mohawk College and began a 1 year program on Small Business and Entrepreneurship while working as a Graphic Designer for the Cummings Library in Mohawk College. This course was both an eye opener and great inspiration. I learned more than I could have ever imagined would be involved in owning a business. Again, I loved every minute of the year in this program. By the end of the program I had developed a full business plan for Graphically Yours, which motivated me even more to make my dream become a reality.
To this day, I have been working on Graphically Yours as a side business to my full-time job as a Graphic Designer at the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit in Simcoe, Ontario. My hopes for 2015 are to research the industry some more and start making some plans so that hopefully in the next few years I can expand this little side business to an actual store front location. For now I’m here to share my experiences with you and share some of my proudest moments. Stay tuned, but for now check out my site!
Thank you to everyone who has blessed me with so much support already. I can hardly wait to see what the future holds!
